the taste of red
It was the third time seeing Butch Walker and you can definitely tell he's moving on up; with the sold out show at Irving Plaza, the new band he's playing with, and those backup girl singers that are basically for show. Hell, even his mike stand was all fancified. Even though it seems he's really soaring up there, he still manages to play the best shows. He knows how to work the stage, the crowd, and actually sing from his heart. I'm glad I had a chance to see him again hopefully more times in the future 'cause goddamn, he's one of the few that leave me with knowing that I should've paid more for that great show. Watch one of his new videos, Joan. Buy Butch's new album with the Let's Go Out Tonights. .........................................................................................................
uncomfortably numb
Tuesday, July 25, 2006 Ah, just when I've had enough of my 2-day rest after a very busy week, the body decides to throw me in a loopy loop of tummy pain. Seemed like a really nice day but as I was getting myself ready to meet up with the roomie in the city, my body gives me a dose of pain and alas, no outing for Jane today. Will have to suck it up tomorrow to do some errands before a day at the gallery followed by a Butch Walker concert. Long days scare me. .........................................................................................................

the drowsy chaperone
Wednesday, July 19, 2006 Went to see The Drowsy Chaperone tonight. Hilarious and simple comedy w/ some really catchy tunes. I miss going to see musicals; this is my first in a loooong time. I'm being eaten alive thanks to the hungry mosquitoes. .........................................................................................................
Night Falls on Hoboken
Thursday, July 13, 2006 I've joined the hipster blogging community and now hooked onto RSS feeds. With Newsgator, it's so easy to read all the blogs in my Bookmarks. You know when blogs are updated so you don't have to wander to their website aimlessly hoping the person posted something new up in the past 2 weeks. If you'd like to subscribe to my blog feed, you can just click the orange button next to "My Links". Also, use del.icio.us to keep track of my bookmarks. yay, no more messy bookmarks folders. The sister is flying to NYC for 2 weeks. It should be good 'cause I haven't had a chance to freeload in a long while. listening to: Yo La Tengo.. (missed them at Prospect Park today.. =/) .........................................................................................................
Music (Art) Pick - Matthew Lewon (eat a bug)
Matthew Lewon - Heard About You on Vimeo I've recently joined Vimeo to get some inspiration and to remedy my boredom. I came across Eat a Bug's music video for a singer/songwriter Matthew Lewon. Stop animation has always intrigued me, maybe because it points out the changes or maybe it's made of still images. It also helps that this song is nice and catchy and an all around cute/funny video. Check out more of eat a bug's videos.. I recommend it. .........................................................................................................
Art/Film Picks - DDR and Rouge
Sunday, July 09, 2006 Ok, I'm a year late but it's only because I never get a chance to go to the Tribeca Film Festivals, thanks to being in Syracuse. I watch a lot of TV and do way too much channel surfing but have found that the local channel 25, NYC TV, is a great source to expanding art/film/music intake. Sunday night, I caught a portion of Backdrop NYC, a show that features short films made and shot by "New Yorkers", and watched Sasie Sealy's (I love her name!) short film, "Dance Mania Fantastic." It is about the pressure of being a salaryman and the sudden lay off from a job makes the main character continue to pretend to his family and fiancee that he is still going to work. Dressed for work and with too much time til 5pm, he wanders into an arcade and discovers Dance Dance Revolution. This 12 minute short has some beautiful cinematography, using a lot of bright colors and lighting to reflect Japanese city life. It also has a great sense of dark humor with his dance steps and short conversations with an arcade attendant. She could be the next Sophia Coppola. I downloaded a bunch of Anita Mui music for my mom lately and it also got transferred onto my ipod. Very rare for a young 20 year old to be listening to what Chinese people call "classics" in Cantonese pop music. My mom also introduced me to "Rouge" (1987) featuring Anita and Leslie Cheung, both big names in Cantonese culture. The film jumps back and forth from the 1930s to the late-1980s, telling a tragic love story about a prostitute's love and devotion to a rich heir. Anita Mui plays the ghost that returns to the modern world to find her rich lover who never made it to the other side with her. There were some questionable scenes; like the modern couple's need to have a sex scene, but this was made in the 80s so eh. Other than that, the scenes from the 30s were great in terms of costume and authencity. One of my top "romance" films. ----- Watch Backdrop NYC on Wed at 9pm, w/ repeats on Sun at 8pm. (Local channel 25) Buy Rouge on DVD on Amazon .........................................................................................................
oh Zidane
even if Materazzi was talking about your mother, you don't go and headbutt him and get yourself thrown out of the game. you probably knew it was gonna go down to penalty kicks and you're the best at it. you're going to retire, you might as well go out with a win. them italians, they sure play dirty.. -_- ah, zidane, porquoi? very sad that france lost ('cause i never liked italy to begin with) .........................................................................................................

Music Pick - Canada
Anybody that knows me knows I love Canada and would probably move to Vancouver in the future, so why wouldn't I like a band that calls themself Canada? (Except they're really from Michigan, with some occasional Canadians) This 8 (sometimes 10) piece music collective is a great mix of folk, indie, pop genres. I'm thinking if you like Sufjan, you'll like them. They have couple of songs for download on their Myspace page. Art Pick - Look at me
Tuesday, July 04, 2006 If you've been under a box the past year, old is the new black. Vintage is the new hot thing and Look At Me is a great website with a huge collection of old photographs. With over 550 photos, you can study how people take family portraits, where they decide to take pictures, and it's just a great form of people watching. They are all found photographs and what's great is that anyone can relate to the pictures, whether it is a sibling portrait from the 50s or the 80s. We all have those photos. Federic Bonn started the project with just a few found photos in Paris and has grown to even score recognition in the NY Times. oh yeah, Happy 4th of July! sidenote: I'd rather not have any more pity for my foot injury. It's a pain, I know it. I'm wasting away, I know it. It's okay. Quit the aww-ing. I'll live. ......................................................................................................... |
About Jane Tam has moved to a different domain. Please forward your links to http://janetam.com. Jane is a 21 year old Photography student placed in Syracuse University but originally from New York City. She enjoys all sorts of music but you can classify her as the stereotypical indie kid. Slightly offensive and bitter sometimes, this blog is a place to vent frustrations but also a blog to display current photo/art projects as well as encourage new talent from music to art to films; basically whatever tickles Jane's fancy.
